Inclusive development allows for sustained increases in living standards for people, protects the environment and livelihoods, creates equitable employment, reduces poverty, safeguards health care and social welfare, and empowers the vulnerable through education and skill development.

This summer course will give participants a deeper understanding of the underlying issues of how to achieve inclusive development, and enhances learners’ ability to analyze, design, and evaluate policies and projects in developing societies, economies and polities. In so doing, the program provides an interdisciplinary and critical approach to problems of governance, equity, stability, and social inclusion in a developing context.

The summer course will give students a solid understanding of the defining parameters of inclusive development; provide a thorough overview of the various approaches, ideas and notions of inclusive development; and review these with typical, thought-provoking, and practical case-studies. The summer course consists of four modules:

• Natural resources, land, and sustainability

• Inclusive cities

• No poverty and no hunger

• Global social policy

Shi LI, Distinguished Professor, Zhejiang University, Director of Institute of Common Prosperity and Development, Zhejiang University, Director of China Institute for Income Distribution, Beijing Normal University, Research Fellow at IZA. He was Professor of Economics, Business School of Beijing Normal University 2005-2019, Professor and Senior Researcher, Institute of Economic Research, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, 1987-2005. His research focus is on issues of income and wealth distribution, poverty, labor market and rural migration and labor market in China. He was a member of advisory committee of Leading Group of Poverty Alleviation, State Council of China, of the 14th Five-Year Plan of China, and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. Professor Li has published in journals such as Journal of Population Economics, Review of Income and Wealth, Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Journal of Development Economics. 

Tao Liu is a professor at the School of Public Affairs of Zhejiang University, he is the chief expert of the Academy of Social Governance at Zhejiang University, and he is a research fellow of the Institute for Common Prosperity and Development (ICPD) at Zhejiang University. His research areas include social policy, welfare states, global social policy and governance, common prosperity in China etc.

Dr. Kevin Chen is Senior Research Fellow and Head of East and Central Asia Office at the International Food Policy Research Institute, Chair Professor of China Academy of Rural Development at Zhejiang University and is also the Dean of CARD. He is co-editor of China Agricultural Economic Review and also managing editor of the journal International Food and Agribusiness Management Review. He is a member of Independent Expert Group (IEG) for Global Nutrition Report (GNR). He was an associate professor at the Department of Resource Economics and Sociology at the University of Alberta from 1995-2004. He also served as an editor for Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics in 2003-04. His interests focus on agri-food value chain development, public policies on poverty, modeling agricultural markets, and South-South cooperation on agriculture.

Tenured Associate Professor, China Academy of Rural Development, Zhejiang University. His research interests include Productivity and Economic Growth, Development Economics, and Agricultural Economics. Dr. Gong’s papers have been published in academic journals, including JDE and AJAE. Before joining ZJU, Dr. Gong studied and worked in Michigan State University, Rice University, Brown University and Baker Institute for Public Policy. 

Zhirong “Jerry” Zhao is Dean of School of Public Affairs (SPA), and a Chair Professor at Department of Urban Development & Management. He holds a Ph.D. in Public Administration from University of Georgia and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Urban Planning from Tongji University.

Dr. Xu is an Assistant Professor at Department of Urban Development & Management, Zhejiang University. His research focuses on urbanization, regional governance and spatial statistics and his work has published on CJRES and EPA etc. He holds a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University.  

Ho is Qiushi Professor at Zhejiang University and Series Editor at Cambridge University Press. Ho is widely published and authored numerous books published with, amongst others, the university presses of Oxford and Cambridge. Ho received the ERC Consolidator Grant, Kapp Prize, China Rural Development Award, and title of National Expert of China.
